September 21, 1975: Denny Doyle’s two-run double sparks the Red Sox to a 6-5 win over Detroit at Tigers Stadium before a sparse crowd of 9,059; the win reduces the Red Sox “magic number” to clinch first place in the AL East to five but Jim Rice’s left hand is broken by a Vernon Ruhle fastball and Jim Ed’s season comes to an end.
