October 3, 1948: On the last day of the regular season, the Red Sox defeated the Yankees 10-5, before a crowd of 31,304 at Fenway Park to tie the Cleveland Indians for first place in the American League and force the first one-game playoff in American League history; the Boston win was led by two doubles by Ted Williams and scoreless relief by Dave “Boo” Ferriss.
