This Day in History: 2000-08-16

August 16, 1954: The Red Sox defeated the New York Giants 6-5 on a Ted Lepcio ninth inning double in an exhibition game played at Fenway Park for the benefit of the Jimmy Fund; the Giants replaced the Braves, who had started the Jimmy Fund in 1948 and then moved to Milwaukee before the 1953 season, transferring stewardship of the charity to the Red Sox.
