July 3, 1978: Carl Yastrzemski paces the Red Sox to a 9-5 win over the New York Yankees before 34,722 at Fenway Park; Yaz contributes three hits, including a run-scoring double in the third inning that gives Yaz 2,800 hits with the Red Sox, and the win gives the Red Sox a nine game lead over the Yankees, and Boston will remain in first place in the AL East through September 13.
