March 26, 1974: The Red Sox release future Hall of Fame members designated hitter Orlando Cepeda and shortstop Luis Aparicio on the same day; Cepeda, who was the team’s first designated hitter, catches on with the Kansas City Royals for one last season, but Aparicio, who had played 18 seasons in the major leagues elects to retire from baseball.
