January 12, 1946: Red Sox All-Star left fielder Ted Williams, who will later be recalled for the Korean War in 1952, is officially discharged as a Second Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps; despite missing three full seasons, Williams will help the Red Sox to the American League pennant with a .342 batting average and 38 home runs in 1946.
