August 3, 1987: The Red Sox defeat the Yankees in 17 innings at Yankee Stadium by a score of 7-5 in a game that had been suspended after 14 innings the night before; in the regularly scheduled game, 53,000 home fans were disappointed as the Red Sox won 8-1 to increase their lead in the AL East to 6 games as Fred Lynn and Jim Rice homered for the Red Sox.
