August 2, 1947: A crowd of 32,794 at Fenway Park on “Bobby Doerr Night” watched the Red Sox defeat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on a two-run Ted Williams home run; before the days of big player contracts it was common for fan favorites to be homered with a “Day” to add to their paychecks and Doerr received a sedan, a truck, a tractor for his Oregon farm, and a juke box.
