June 16, 1978: Red Sox lefthander Bill “Spaceman” Lee announces that he is quiting the Red Sox and retiring from baseball to protest the trade of his good friend Bernie Carbo to the Brewers; Lee’s “retirement” last only one day but the Spaceman, who was 7-3 at the time, spends the rest of the year in Don Zimmer’s doghouse!
