April 5, 1901: The Boston Americans who didn’t oficially become the Red Sox until 1908 played their first game as a team, winning their exhibition game against the University of Virginia 13-0; three pitchers combined to shut-out the Cavaliers, and the Americans played errorless defense, led by future Hall of Fame third baseman, Jimmy Collins.
