March 12, 1980: Tom Yawkey, who purchased the Boston Red Sox in 1933, providing new life for the moribund franchise, and who owned the team for 45 seasons until his death in 1977, is selected for Baseball’s Hall of Fame by the Veteran’s Committee; Yawkey is the first owner selected to the Hall whose only connection to baseball was his ownership role.
