January 20, 1966: Ted Williams, who retired from the Boston Red Sox following the 1960 season, is the only former player selected in the annual National Baseball Hall of Fame election; Williams who still holds the highest on base percentage in MLB history at .482, was named on 282 of 302 (93%) of the Hall of Fame ballots.
